+ Abstract

River mouths are highly vulnerable to sea level rise associated with global climate change, strengthening storm surges, and wave action, accompanied by abrasion of seacoasts and flooding of vast deltaic areas. Therefore, experience in studying dangerous hydrological events of river and sea origin at river mouths is necessary and useful for developing criteria for assessing the danger of such events and their comprehensive typification. Using the example of large deltas of the Mediterranean region (Rhone and Ebro), it is shown that despite a rather good study of such events at these river mouths, there is no generally accepted typification, and different classifications are given for the same object. Dangerous hydrological events at the mouths of the Rhone and Ebro rivers are subdivided by different researchers both according to genetic characteristics (the origin of precipitation) and water discharge values, frequency and duration of flood, assessment of the impact on the environment and human life. Dangerous hydrological events at the studied mouths are considered from the point of view of the typification adopted by the authors. It is noted that among the dangerous hydrological events in the Rhone and Ebro deltas the most typical are fluvial, storm surge, fluvial-storm surge, fluvial-pluvial floods, as well as dangerous droughts.
