Like many other characteristics, density (ρ) is an important property of soils. The accuracy and reliability of its determination directly influence the precision of calculations in the design of buildings and structures. At present, there is no reliable method for sampling such soils in an undisturbed state. When using soil samplers, sands lose some of their natural properties. Therefore, alternative methods are employed that allow density determination directly in situ, based on empirical correlations. One such method is static penetration testing, in which the key parameter obtained is the cone penetration resistance (qc). In the last century, in the former USSR, correlation studies of the relationship between qc and the void ratio (e) were carried out by L.G. Mariupolsky and I.A. Busel. This article presents a comparison of these two methodologies. The study has shown that the results of void ratio and density determination using both methodologies are closely comparable. A calculation method for determining the density and moisture content of sands located below the groundwater table is presented.
